The Ride
By: Maura Noel
You don't pick the bike, the bike picks you. I
tried half a dozen bikes in my search to
upgrade my road ride. Some were smooth,
some were cushy, some were sluggish.... And
then you stumble onto the bike that whispers
"I was made for you". As you clip in on one
side, the second pedal meets your foot
halfway with a 'here, let me do that for you.'
You pull away from the curb with minimal
effort and accelerate down the street toward
the hills. You realize you're not pulling the
bike along with your effort; the bike is helping
you glide across the pavement because it
understands what you want.
As you stand to power uphill your steed says
"Yes! Let's go!". And when you reach the top
completely spent and cursing, you collapse
across its frame saying "I need a rest". The
lighter-than-air wheels carry your last ounce
of effort over the hilltop and set your course
for the smooth sleek downhill that will
rejuvenate your aching legs. You wrap
yourself within its carbon/aluminum wings as it
shuttles you past your compadres who shout
obscenities at your mounting speed - while
you coast. Fitted to your body, the bike
responds when you stand and hurtles
downhill when you tuck into it. You think
about turning and it's done. You touch the
brakes and you're at the desired speed in
seconds. It wants what you want and delivers
- the ride of your dreams.
Hi Joanne,
I was delighted to receive your call. Thank
you for checking on how the Bianchi & I are
getting along. I actually rode by your shop
on Monday, as I wanted you to see for
yourself just exactly how over-the-moon I
am with this fabulous new ride!!
I could not possibly be happier! It is
everything I'd hoped it would be and then
some. There is something so impossibly
romantic or nostalgic or Old World about
this bike. It's plush like a cruiser with so
many seating/grip options, but fast, fast,
fast. The gear range is great for easy starts,
even with a full load of stuff in the basket,
and when I build up momentum, this Bianchi
-- it flies like the wind.
How's that for a satisfied customer?! :-) I
feel so lucky!
Joanne, I just want to add a quick note of
appreciation for your service. Despite
having a very busy shop, you took time with
me to sell me the right bike and even more
to make sure that it was the right size; then
still more when it came in, to make sure that
the right bike was then adjusted perfectly
for me. Other shops and cycling gurus
provide similar services, but the difference
is that you listened carefully to what I
wanted from the bike AND to what I didn't
want, and then talked through very plainly
what you thought would work best for me.
What makes that so special is that by
addressing my goals and concerns (not to
mention by helping me articulate what my
goals are!), it was clear that you understood
what I wanted form the bike. My decisions
became so easy, as I could trust that all your
valuable insight and knowledge was being
directed at my riding style and wants. It is
much more common that someone would
sell what they themselves think is best (for
themselves).
We are lucky to have a lot of good bike
shops in Santa Cruz, but luckier still that you
opened your doors. Your help, knowledge,
service, patience and ability to explain the
technical into the "what it will feel like" are
head and shoulders above anything I've
ever experienced. Thanks!! Stacey Nelson
